Learning from others: three insights from the School of Possibility pilot
I came across this quote this week and thought it was the perfect reminder in advance of the pilot session I ran on Monday about team experiments.
I wanted to give you an update and let you know how it went and some of the great pieces of feedback I received from my attendees.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and shared after the session!!!
Being not so good is great!
You may not feel it in the moment, but I realized as I joined the call that regardless of where things would end up, I would have some new insights from the pilot to make it even better.
Was it great? Nope!
Was it good?
Well, I’ll be honest. Parts were good, and some areas needed focus and more thoughtfulness. Not surprising in light of the newness of the topic to me.
Still, I got some new thinking out to new friends … which was a win!
Insight 1: Audience needs are essential.
In my session, I explained why taking smaller approaches to team experiments | pilots is important to consider. In a feedback session with one of the folks who joined, I learned that this information wasn’t necessary. They already believed in the approach, that it was more about understanding the what and the how.
My other presentations assumed limited existing knowledge, so this was a new way to think.
Insight 2: Structure creates certainty.
I used three blocks of content to frame experimentation to help chart the part through the conversation. This allowed me to understand where I might go deeper and where I should stay at a high level. This was excellent in creating certainty as I went through my materials.
I heard from others that the structure helped as we went through the materials.
Insight 3: Add more story
Using stories makes the material more memorable - so people can not only remember but share it with others. I want to use more stories and examples in my next pilot - to be more deliberate.
Next steps
I love this quote from Karyn Lu.
Was it fun? Absolutely! And terrifying. And challenging.
It takes courage to be bold and go out there. It’s precisely what I plan to do next.
